the gum incident

The other day while standing in the grocery store line, I asked Chris permission to buy a pack of gum. I literally said, "Can I get this gum?" Chris laughed, embarrassed because the clerk and everyone behind us in line heard what I just said. He quickly answered, "Of course, you can get whatever you want." I was mortified because I heard how ridiculous I sounded and I hated it.

But, in the moment, how can you take back a comment like that? I wanted to cover it up by saying something ultra feminist like, "what I meant was, I will be buying this pack of gum because I am a strong women who needs no approval from a man!" But instead, I kept my mouth shut and hurried the purchase along.

See, this has happened a few times before; it just comes out. Let me explain that my intentions are good. When I say, "can I", I actually mean, "should I". And I ask this question because I value Chris's opinion especially when it involves our money. Chris wishes that I never ask those questions at all, and believe me, after that experience, I won't.

Katie, I do the same thing with Jeremiah. Its not needing permission to buy things, its like you said, you value his opinion and when you share everything its only natural to talk about things and ask questions. I think its great I am not the only person to do that.

Hey- you remind me of a little girl asking her Dad for a treat. That's cute, Katie.

You are such a thoughtful wife! See, we differ in this way because I love to buy things on the sly and simply forget to mention it to Joey...that is until he sees it on our credit card bill :)

We do that all the time! Kevin asks me to buy things, I ask him to buy things-I think it is a good thing.
